A Certificate in Nursing is required to become a nursing assistant, and this certificate can be obtained at one of hundreds of vocational schools or community colleges across the country. A high school diploma is preferred, but not necessary, to become certified as a nursing assistant. Most major hospitals will require some proven experience in health care, and this can usually be obtained while training. After fulfilling all the requirements for the course, an individual must first pass an exam to become certified as a nurse assistant. Although salary depends on the location of the placement and the experience of the candidate, an average starting salary is around $25,000.
