A political scientist examines the role of government, voting patterns, political theories, philosophies, ideologies and other related phenomena in order to better understand how our world is organized and how it functions. The field is vast, consisting of specialized niches in international relations, electoral behavior, human rights and abuses issues, governmental policy and polling. Courses can take the form of comparative or American-focused politics, and can get as specific as exploring nuclear plant environmental policy and impacts. Careers that are open to political science graduates include public administration, nonprofit organizations, political advisor positions, local government offices and federal positions.
